ALU ORSA COURSES

 

ALU offers a variety of courses in the areas of Operations Research/Systems Analysis (ORSA), Management Science and Decision Science.

Core ORSA Courses typically require students to be in an Operations Research or related career field and require some mathematical background.  The typical student is in an operations research, engineer, scientist, or other technical position or has an educational background (bachelor degree or higher) in a mathematics, engineering, scientific or other related technical area.   Please check the course listing for additional prerequisites.  

ORSA Military Applications Course Phase 1 (ORSA MAC Ph 1) Four week resident course  which provides the necessary foundation for follow on education in the military applications of operations research methodologies.  This course is designed for military officers and civilians designated or serving in operations research related positions.   This course is a prerequisite for ORSA MAC , Phase II.

ORSA Military Applications Course Phase 2 (ORSA MAC Ph 2) Ten week resident course for personnel who have successfully completed or validated ORSA MAC Phase 1 (see above).  This course provides specialty education in the military application of operations research/ systems analysis methodologies.

FA49 Qualification Course (FA49 Q Course) Six week resident course designed to prepare Army officers to apply business practices, tools and methodologies as senior analysts on Army and Joint staffs.  Part of Intermediate Level Education (ILE) related functional area training and education for Functional Area 49 (ORSA) officers.

ORSA Operational Training Course (O Course)   Two week resident course that provides previously trained ORSA analysts with the training necessary in preparation of a Corps, Division or theater of operations assignment.  Nominees must be assigned to FA49 positions in the Division or Corps, deploying as an analyst or supporting one of these positions from an analytical agency.

ORSA Continuing Education Program (ORSA CEP) One week resident or  onsite course for OPMS Functional Area 49 or  GS-1515 civilian career field analysts. These courses provide professionals the opportunity to gain an in depth knowledge of a particular subject and to keep pace with the latest developments in the field of operations research.  Classes are taught by the leading experts in academia, business, and government.

The following courses are part of our ORSA Special Topics Seminar Program and typically require a good mathematical background.  Please check the course listing for additional prerequisites.  

ORSA Technologies and Applications Course (ORSA TAC) One week resident or onsite course that provides previously trained ORSA analysts with an exposure to the latest ORSA techniques and current application of these techniques to military problems in a spreadsheet environment.  This course is recommended for all analysts who have not participated in formal ORSA training in the past 3 years.

ORSA Special Topics Seminar (ORSA STS):  These seminars may last from 2-5 days resident or onsite.  The seminars focus on specialized operations research/quantitative techniques areas based on the needs of the organization requesting the seminar.  The emphasis is on problem solving with the assistance of computer modeling and analysis.  Topics and prerequisites vary depending on the subject and the student backgrounds. Please see the course descriptions or contact the course director regarding course prerequisites..  Organizations need to contact the course director to arrange for a class offering.

Introductory ORSA Courses typically require little or no math background The typical student could be in potentially any career field.  A general understanding of high school mathematics is desirable.   Please check the course listing for additional prerequisites.  

Decision Analysis Course (DAC):  One week onsite or resident course for any government employee who is interested in Decision Analysis.  DAC provides a comprehensive introduction to the qualitative and quantitative methods for conducting a decision analysis of a project or program.

Risk Analysis Course (RAC) One week onsite or resident course for any government employee who is interested in Risk Analysis.  This course introduces the qualitative and quantitative methods for conducting a risk analysis of a project or program.

ORSA Familiarization Course (ORSA FAM) One week onsite course for Army and Air Force personnel in action officer positions who are not operations research analysts. The course familiarizes action officers with basic ORSA tools and techniques.

EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT WITH EXCEL:  FUNDAMENTALS (ALMC-ST):  A three day course that is a review of fundamental Microsoft Excel skills that will help a student more effectively manage their work environment and operations.

EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT WITH EXCEL:  INTERMEDIATE (ALMC-ST):  A three day course that is a review of intermediate Microsoft Excel skills that will help a student more effectively manage their work environment and operations as well as design Excel Workbook Systems that will enhance the work of others in their organization.

Review of Managerial Statistics (ALMC-ST):  A one week resident or onsite course that focuses on analyzing, computing and interpreting statistical measures and the results from statistical procedures.
