Artifact Support Facilities Kick-Off Meeting
JAN 10

FORT LEE, VA (Jan. 5, 2010) -- The ALU Marketing and Outreach Specialist and Assistant Vice President, ARNG attended the artifact support facilities kick-off meeting at the DPWL, 15 October 2009.
By summer 2010, ALU will become home to a Civil War era (reproduction) canon originally maintained by the Army Ordnance Museum in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
The design team reviewed scope of work for compliance with functional and space requirements, discussed site selections provided by Fort Lee DPWL, and expectations of project in terms of compatibility, historical significance, and extent and demands placed on the artifact support facilities.
Concrete slabs will support artifact and should be integrated with the site by landscape rock or smooth cobbles. This will buffer vegetation and keep landscaping equipment at safe distance from artifact. A rocked buffer should be provided. Landscaping beds/groundcover will maintain vegetation around artifact so it does not interfere with viewing. Artifact will be located near existing sidewalks so it can be viewed at a distance of 8-16 feet depending on size of artifact and to minimize amount of new sidewalk required. Additional sidewalks should match existing sidewalks.
The Center for Military History Standards will provide signage. Signage will not require lighting.
A “dusk to dawn” photocell timed eye will provide lighting which will turn the light off and on as needed due to darkness. The cannon will require a lockable device to keep it from being moved or stolen. Because the cannon will be movable and have the ability to fire, it could be used for graduations, award ceremonies, etc.
Construction is expected to begin early Apr 10, with a projected completion of 1 Jun, giving foundation adequate time for concrete curing for mid Jul artifact installation.
